A top BCCI official had confirmed last year that the board is planning to begin the women’s Indian Premier League by 2023 with six teams in the inaugural season. As per reports, men’s IPL teams Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have expressed interest in owning one of the teams.

It was earlier reported that all the existing ten men’s IPL franchises will be given the first right of refusal to buy the women’s IPL teams. Speaking about the same in a recent interview with a news agency, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said, “As and when it (women’s IPL) starts, we are going to be interested. That is all. Let the BCCI decide first. As of now, there has been no communication about it.” CSK have won the men’s IPL trophy four times under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Regarding the inauguration of the women’s IPL, the BCCI official had said, “We have already started working on the plan as to how many teams we can have and what window is going to suit, because we have the men’s IPL as well. Some franchises have already shown interest and are very keen to be part of this tournament. We are planning to have 6 teams to start with. Our team is working on the auction process and other important aspects of the tournament.”
