High Court's decision on Netflix, Amazon Prime ban

The petition filed by an NGO seeking a ban on online streaming platforms Netflix and Amazon Prime, due to the sexually explicit content displayed in some of the shows, has been dismissed by the Delhi High Court on Friday.

The non-governmental organization, taking the examples of TV shows Game of Thrones, Vikings, Sacred Games, and Spartacus, claimed that the web-exclusive series telecasted ‘vulgar, religiously forbidden, and morally unethical’ content. The plea also indicated that most of the content was in violation of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

However, reports suggest that certain online streaming platforms like Hotstar, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc., have signed a code to self-regulate their content, avoiding government censorship. A plea filed earlier was rejected by the High Court as well that accused the Netflix web-series Sacred Games of defaming a former prime minister of the country.
