India's wicktkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik came to the fore and indulged in some nonchalant, classic big-hitting to take India across the line in a tense final of the 3-nation T20 Nidhaas Cup final held in Colombo yesterday night.

Dinesh thus did India's regular wicket-keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni proud as the 'Ranchi' legend watched the game from his home as he, Virat Kohli and a few others had been rested for the tri-series involving India, Bangaladesh and Sri Lanka.  Host Sri Lanka was eliminated from the tournament last Friday when it lost to Bangladesh in the last of the league matches.

India won the toss and put Bangladesh into bat and allowed Bangladesh to make a late comeback to pile up 166 runs of its allotted 20 overs.  India lost its in-form players Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina cheaply but Rohit Sharman and K.L. Rahul kept the Indian flag going.  Despite Rohit's 56 runs, India found themselves in a hole as it didn't score as it would have liked in the middle-overs.

Sent ahead of Dinesh, Tamil Nadu's Vijay Shankar - who unfortunately got to touch his bat for the first time in the series in a tense atmosphere - hit some runs but upped the tension by scoring just one run off five balls in the 18th over when India needed 34 runs off three overs.  The next ball, the set batsman Manish Pandey skied a ball - apparently out of tension - and returned to the pavilion.

Defeat certainly stared at India as Dinesh Karthik strode in and took strike in the 19th over bowled by Rubel.  What followed was a mayhem as Dinesh struck classic the final over.  After Shankar got out after hitting a crucial four, Dinesh sealed the fate of the match in style by hitting a lofted six over cover off the last ball of the match, sending the Sri Lankan and Indian crowds into unbelievable frenzy.

Washington Sundar was adjudged the 'man of the series' and expectedly, Dinesh Karthik got the 'man of the match' award for his classic 29 off 8 balls.
