'Durgamati': 'Bhaagamathie' Hindi remake tortures audience

'Durgamati', the Hindi remake of 'Bhaagamathie', is streaming on an OTT platform. Released today, it has been panned by film critics. Director Ashok G, who helmed the Telugu original, is busy receiving a lot of flak for the lame treatment of the story. To be sure, it's a faithful remake that sticks to the scenes and spirit of the original

It appears that casting Bhumi Padnekar as Chanchal has proved to be a disaster. The role suited Anushka Shetty, but the otherwise talented Bhumi couldn't sail through it. If the audience's reactions on social media are anything to go by, only Arshad Warsi (reprising Jayaram from the original) has managed to do a decent job.

Film critic Rahul Desai opined that 'Durgamati' goes hammer and tongs to deliver what is essentially a 3-minute message. A leading publication, tearing into the film, said that the horror-comedy peddles a bunch of tawdry notions about vengeance and the occult, all served with an overdose of frenzied drama.

When the Telugu original released in 2018, it was hailed to the skies by film critics and the audience alike.
