Tamil Nadu chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami has elicited the attention of his Karnataka counterpart Siddaramaiah in releasing 7 TMC water immediately to meet the irrigation needs of farmers of Delta region in the State.

In a letter penned to Siddaramaiah, Palaniswami has requested neighbouring Karnataka to release a minimum of 15 TMC water to meet the irrigation and other needs of farmers of Cauvery Delta region in Tamil Nadu.

“Release of 7 TMC Cauvery water is an immediate necessity and ought to be the first priority to meet the growing needs of farmers in the Delta region,” the chief-minister said in his letter before adding that the remaining 8 TMC water can be released in phases in the next couple of weeks.

“Now that Karnataka’s farmers have completed their irrigation related works and Karnataka has 40.82 TMC in its reservoirs in storage as compared to the 21.27 TMC water in Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu, I request Karnataka to honour Tamil Nadu’s request for release of 15 TMC water at the earliest,” the letter concluded.
