The Malayalam film ‘Empuraan’, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj, was released on March 27. The movie features a few scenes based on the 2002 Gujarat riots. A character in the film is named ‘Baba Bajrangi’, and some of the dialogues are said to hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community. Due to public objections, about 3 minutes of controversial scenes were removed from the film.
A few days ago, income tax officials conducted a raid at the residence of one of the film's producers, Gokulam Gopalan. Following this, director and actor Prithviraj received a notice from the Income Tax Department.
Now, another producer of the film, Antony Perumbavoor, has also been issued a notice by the Income Tax Department. The notice reportedly seeks details on the financial transactions related to the films ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Marakkar’, and also requests information on the overseas rights of ‘Empuraan’. It is also claimed that Rs. 2.5 crore was paid to Mohanlal in Dubai, which the department has asked details about.
