Fall

'Fall' is directed by Siddarth Ramaswamy. The first three episodes of the first season are currently streaming. The next episodes will be out soon.

The thriller is based on 'Vertige', a Canadian television miniseries, originally released in 2012. Divya (Anjali) has been in a coma because of a fall she suffered recently. Some characters believe it was a suicide attempt because of Divya's broken relationship with her boyfriend Daniel. However, it was a conspiracy that pushed her into an abyss that fateful night. What is the scandal about? Why are her own siblings baying for her blood?

Divya's brother Rohit (SP Charan) wants life support to be removed so that Divya doesn't return from a coma. Divya and Rohit's parents are heartbroken in the meanwhile. Her sister Maya, on the other hand, is worried that Divya returning to normal might expose the conspiracy, of which she was a part.

The first three episodes that are streaming thus far have little space for Anjali. It wouldn't be a spoiler to say that she is back from a coma but nothing much proceeds by the end of the third episode. Sonia Agarwal, Santhosh Pratap, Namita Krishnamoorthy, Thalaivasal Vijay, and Poornima Bagyaraj are seen in different roles.

The memory-loss element is back and the same could have been treated in a refreshing manner. The intrigues within the family, a conspiracy involving a real-estate scam, the interference of an outsider, the threats posed by Rohit to Daniel's business interests, the double-faced characters who want to put a spanner in the wheel of a noble cause, and many such elements make for a decent watch.

Much rides on the coming episodes. The Canadian original was a miniseries and one has to see how the Indian remake is going to be. In recent times, web series 'Gaalivaana' was remade from a British miniseries. The OTT space is increasingly turning to foreign products and making official remakes.

The production values, thus far, are apt. Since the series has been made in Tamil, the dubbing is a bit off. But the borrowed sensibilities make up for the demerit. The performances are also not melodramatic.

Verdict:

'Fall' has a good start. The rest of the episodes, to be out soon, will determine its worth.
