Garud Commando Jyoti Prakash Nirala gave his life for the nation during an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. The brave commando killed 5 terrorists in various encounters before his demise. During the 2018 Republic Day celebrations, Nirala was granted the Ashok Chakra award posthumously.

Nirala’s family faced severe financial issues following his martyrdom. The family which consisted of four daughters and the commando, was finding it difficult to raise funds for one of his sister’s weddings. The family may have originally had only one son, but Nirala had earned many more brothers in the Air Force. And the Garud Commandos stepped in to help the family when they heard of the issues. With each commando in the force contributing Rs. 500, Rs. 5 lakhs were collected for the wedding. Photos also show the bride walking on the officers' palms, as a mark of respect to Nirala. This is a really touching gesture from the special forces unit.
