Gangai Amaren is a man of multi-talents. He received the national award for his first song as a lyricist. He has proved his mettle as a director, screenwriter, music -director, singer and actor. He was one of the first celebrities from Kollywood to condemn the controversial Beep song of a multi talented film celebrity of younger generation Silamabarasan, with the alleged participation of music director Anirudh Ravichander.

His elder brother and the legendary music director Ilaiyaraja has been facing the ire of journalists and organization representing press and media workers for the way he reacted when a young TV channel reporter questioned him about the Beep song. In his Facebook post, Amaren defended his brother`s public outrage.

In this exclusive and detailed interview to Indiaglitz, the veteran explains why the Beep song has to be opposed unequivocally opposed, how it would become a bad precedent if it is encouraged, why the question to Ilaiyaraja and its timing are wrong and how the legend`s angry outrage is justified.

You were one of the first to condemn the Beep song as soon as it was released?

Yes I have a social responsibility right. There is everything in literature, including sex. Doing it openly would be wrong. If this is allowed people will start doing the same in future also.

When such controversies arise people say that only lyricist should write lyrics so that usage of decent language would be ensured? Would you support this argument?

I have been working in so many fields in cinema. So I cannot speak about that. Multi-talented persons cannot be asked to concentrate on one field. We cannot order Kamal Haasan to just act in films. God has given multiple talents to certain people. How we use that can only be questioned about.

When did u listen to the Beep song first?

When I was travelling in car, one friend played this to me. Bharathiar`s birthday celebrations were happening in Erode on 13th December. I listened to the song when was going to that function. Musicians will not just listen to lyrics. We will also listen to what goes in the background like chorus, orchestration etc. Everything has a meaning. They will be used to create a mood for the song. In this song even these things were packed with indecent stuff. And the words they have muted. Such type of thinking should not be initiated at all. Justifying the act saying that he did not release it after recording it is wrong. Who is facing the brunt now? It`s you (Simbu). You are my son.

He calls me as Appa` and also was also pained over my criticism on the song. He has shared it with Venkat Prabhu. But I said I have the right to criticize him in this matter. When people oppose it and raise questions, he answers everything except the questions about the muted word. It is wrong. It has been released. He says he kept the song only at his home. Will an outsider come to your home and do this? The song addressing youngsters about love is okay. But is it right to use the word you have beeped and the ones you have used in the chorus?

T.Rajendhar is supporting his son in this matter. He justifies his son. What`s your take on it?

It is very wrong. He always speaks about Tamil. The words that are forbidden in Tamil have been used in this song. I cannot utter that word even once. No one can say it in open. Can TR and Simbu publicly utter the muted word in public? A word is muted by censors because it is filthy and it should not be heard by anyone. But these songs are attempts to develop a culture where the mute itself gets a meaning. What can we do with these people?

What do you sons Venkat Prabhu and Premji are close with Simbu, opine about this?

They are youngsters. If you want to know their opinion, get it from them. But their songs will not have crass words. Double meaning words have been there in the songs of Kannadasan and Vaali. But there has never been a time when bad words are used openly and muted.

Songs insulting women have started coming in many numbers. How can these be prevented?

Thirudanaai paarthu thirundhaavittaal thiruttai ozhikka mudiyaadhu. (Theft cannot be eradicated if thieves correct themselves)

Some people say it`s like denying creative freedom?

Is filthy thinking a creative freedom? People write sex stories. Can they be released openly and distributed to children. What concern you have for the future? Don`t you know if one does this others will follow and the ugliness will spread?

Many women rights organizations, Students and lyricists have been condemning and acting against the song? But a section asks who will stop women wearing revealing attires and actresses showing excessive vulgarity in cinema?

There is a censor certification process for films. There are no such rules for posters and internet. It is difficult to censor internet .How can we correct these things?

Isaignani Ilaiyaraja was asked about the beep song controversy his reaction also became a controversy. You had expressed your opinion about that in Facebook. Please tell about that.

Yes. Some people are beyond question. Can you interview the state or the central cultural minister regarding this filth? Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Kalaignar or Amma? You should know you are asking what question to whom and where. He was talking about something entirely different. At that time you are inserting this question. He never listens to his own songs. He has not even listened to Yuvan`s songs. He does not even know what the Beep song is. That`s what he asked rightly. Did you notice the face of that reporter who raised the question to him? Will you show your arrogant face to any one? We respect the freedom of Press. It is okay that media persons interview people and raise questions to everyone. But can you ask a question to Ilaiyaraja that should actually go to Premananda? How is it right?

People say Raja sir could have refused answer to that question and his harsh reaction has not taken well by many?

Everyone has unique characteristics. I have seen a big shot, very big celebrity doing same kind of a thing in a BBC interview. Even you would have watched it. That was also a reporter and that was also a media. So you should know what you are asking and to whom. He (Ilaiyaraja) has now decided that he will not make any public appearances. You (Media) were the reason for this. This is what you (media) have lost. You cannot see him or interview him again. In the past he would stay away from media and I will only speak on his behalf. Now that same thing has returned. Ask anything to people like me. I have always been close with media. He (the reporter) seems to be an inexperienced one. I feel that that reporter should apologize for asking a wrong question at the wrong place. He should understand his mistake. My angst will subs
