'Good Bad Ugly' : A Mass Feast from AK for 'Good Bad Ugly' Fans!
Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and directed by Adhik Ravichandran, Good Bad Ugly stars Ajith Kumar, Trisha, Sunil, Arjun Das, Prasanna, Prabhu, Jackie Shroff, and others.
AK, also known as Red Dragon (Ajith Kumar), is a gangster who's considered a monster among global gangsters. He puts aside all his criminal activities for the sake of his wife and child, surrenders to the police, and has been in prison for the past 14 years. At this point, a problem arises for his son Vihaan AK (Karthikeya Dev). To save his son, AK picks up his old violent ways again. Even though he steps back into the field to save his son, his wife Ramya (Trisha) is furious with him for returning to gangster life. The rest of the story revolves around this family tension, his concern for his son, and the strategies of gangsters around him.
Ajith Kumar, aka AK… The entire film feels like it was made for this name alone. It's an AK show all the way. He displays mass appeal, impresses in various looks, brings back the chocolate boy charm, channels his Billa vibe, and delivers powerful action scenes. The supporting characters talk about his legacy, mixing valor and wit, turning him into a mass icon. The movie is packed with nostalgic references to his older films, making it a firecracker treat for his fans.
Next to catch attention is Arjun Das. His voice and body language are a unique highlight. As a villain, he brings a never-before-seen appearance and demeanor. The pre-interval confrontation scene between Ajith and Arjun Das is sure to captivate not just fans but also general audiences. Trisha, Prasanna, Prabhu, Shine Tom Chacko, Jackie Shroff, Priya Varrier, and others have done their parts well, but most of them seem to be there just to praise Ajith's character and hype his legacy.
Another strong point is the background score and the use of retro songs. G.V. Prakash’s intense BGM and the ‘90s song mashups provide a hundred percent mass guarantee for action scenes.
With Abinandhan Ramanujam’s cinematography, the visuals are colorful and eye-catching. The editor seems to have approached the film as an Ajith fan himself, syncing the scenes to match the rhythm of the songs like a dance.
But where’s the story? That might be the audience's question as they may walk out of the theatre while taking a call. The screenplay revolves entirely around Ajith's fandom. However, since the trailer, promotions, and interviews didn't build any expectations regarding the plot and openly positioned it as a fan-centric film, it’s best to walk in with no expectations.
Overall, Good Bad Ugly is Very Good for Ajith fans, Bad for those seeking strong plot and screenplay, and might feel Ugly for those looking for cult classics or award-winning cinema. It’s a pure entertainer to enjoy during the long holiday break.
