Govt acts against TikTok after SC refuses stay on ban

Recently, the Madras High Court had given an interim order banning the ultra-popular video-sharing app, TikTok.  On Monday, the Supreme Court refused to stay the order.

Today, the Government of India has reportedly asked of Google and Apple to remove TikTok from Play Store and App Store, respectively.

If the ban comes through, TikTok stands to lose as many as 119 million users in India.  The app has been accused of hosting pornographic and sleazy content. Like all social media apps, this one too has been misused by criminals.  On its part, TikTok has said that it's not liable to be punished for what "third parties" do.

The SC will hear the matter again on April 22.
