HBD to the Silver Jubilee hero Mohan

The beginning of the eighties witnessed the premier superstar of Kollywood, Sivaji Ganesan pushed into hibernation for lack of quality scripts. Just about the same time Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan took to the masala route and were fast becoming the rage among the youth audience. Family audiences fed on the melodrama's of the time had to wait for a Balachander film or a Sivakumar starrer.
In 1980, Mahendran's Nenjathai Killathey' had a one year run and one of the heroes of the film Mohan got noticed even though he was a few films old. There was no looking back for the handsome freckle faced hero who followed it with blockbusters Kilinjalgal' (250 Days), Payangal Mudivathillai' (500 Days), Gopurangal Saivathillai' (200 Days), Vidhi' (500 Days), 'Mouna Ragam' (175 days) and many more that helped him maintain an enviable 80% strike rate of hits which no other hero can boast till date.
The uniqueness of Mohan is that at the peak of his career when he was even rated above Rajini and Kamal, he did not allow himself to be typecast and experimented with villain roles in Vidhi' and Nooravathu Naal' and many a supporting role and cameos. Though many years have passed by since his films have released, his popularity has never waned thanks to his super hit songs composed by Illayaraja for films of R. Sunderrajan, K. Rangaraj and Manivannan mostly produced by Kovai Thambi which are simply known as Mohan hits.
