A man from Haryana, who was admitted to the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital over suspicion of coronavirus infection, fell to his death from the sixth floor of the building after he tried to make his escape from the quarantine ward.

The 55-year-old man, identified as Shiv Charan, hailed from the Noorpur village in the Panipat district of Haryana. He was admitted to the hospital on April 1 with multiple ailments and had developed symptoms of COVID-19 as well, following which he was placed in an isolation ward. "We have got his report telephonically in which he was found negative of COVID-19," Karnal's Chief Medical Officer reportedly informed a news agency. Police have mentioned that the man used his bedsheets as a rope while trying to escape from the hospital, but fell from the sixth floor of the building. He died on the spot and his body was sent to the mortuary of the hospital.

Investigation of the matter is currently underway. As of April 7 evening, the number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in India has crossed 4840. Tamil Nadu has reported 621 cases so far.
