Has the ‘BJP’ wave dissipated? Only 3 wins in 17 LS by-polls since 2014!

The recently held Lok Sabha by-polls in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are only the latest spell of defeats for the ruling BJP at the Centre which has lost all but 3 Lok Sabha by-polls held during the past four years ever since it swept to power in 2014 riding high on ‘Modi wave’.

It may be recalled that the BJP rode to power on the ‘Modi wave’ during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, ending a decade-long Congress-led UPA rule by bagging simple majority (of 282 seats) on its own in the Lok Sabha.  For the first time in the party’s history, it had gained majority to rule the country and it was also for the first time after almost 30 years that a single party managed to get simple majority in the Lower House.

Soon after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, he resigned from Vadodara as he chose to represent Varanasi (the other constituency that he had won from) in Parliament. The BJP won in Vadodara but lost to TRS in Medak in Telengana and to the Samajwadi Party in Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh.

It had been losing Lok Sabha by-polls at alarming intervals and taking into account the three Lok Sabha seates (two in Uttar Pradesh and one in Bihar) which it lost on Wednesday, the BJP has thus far lost 14 out of the 17 Lok Sabha by-p[olls held since it took over at the Centre in May, 2014.

Does it signify a significant turn in voters’ mood post the GST and Demonetization scenarios?
