Here's How a Digital Paul Walker Was Created For His Unfinished Scenes in 'Furious 7'

Paul Walker's tragic demise in a car crash last year was the talk everywhere. Ever since the accident, it was an uphill task all the way for both Universal Pictures and director James Wan to get done with the 'Furious 7' production. The whole team were poised with two choices: either they scrap the film or go ahead with rewrites and body doubles to finish Walker's performance. And, they went with the latter, but were tight-lipped in divulging any of the details.

A new report now ratifies how the 'Furious 7' team recreated a digital Paul Walker in order to finish his pending portions in the film. This is the same team that gave us an astounding Gollum in 'The Lord of the Rings' and Caesar in 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes'. 'The Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson's WETA Digital was hired in a very hush-hush manner to bring Paul Walker back to life and finish his memorable portrayal of Bryan O'Connor.

And, WETA Digital has indeed delivered on that front. If you pay close attention while watching the film, you will observe how the majority of Paul Walker's unfinished scenes were completed with the help of his brothers Caleb and Cody as body doubles integrated with CGI, carefully chosen camera angles and the right lighting. The final result is a bang on Paul Walker back to life right in front of our eyes.

It must be noted that Walker isn't the only person to be brought back to life via special effects. Oliver Reed too passed away during the shoot of Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' and was then digitally recreated. Actress Nancy Marchand was also digitally recreated since she had one final scene on the hit TV series 'The Sopranos'.

Keeping the development and exploits of such a technology, one cannot help but wonder to what extent such a technology will be implemented in film-making in the future. The onset of such a technology could mean a character could be digitally reproduced for years and years to come. In simple terms, this means a replacement for Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man won't be necessary since he could be digitally recreated. On some levels, this might be disturbing. But, hardcore fans will not mind it and will readily give it a seal of approval.
