Formal Impeachment Inquiry Against President Biden Initiated by House Republicans

The House's senior Republican, Kevin McCarthy, said that President Joe Biden will be impeached. McCarthy said the investigation focused on "allegations of abuse of power, obstruction, and corruption". Republicans have been examining Biden since January but have found no misconduct. Instead, the hearings have illuminated Hunter Biden's shady financial practices and Joe Biden's knowledge of his son's activities.
McCarthy's move was quickly slammed by the White House due to the nine-month investigation's lack of proof. Hunter Biden is under federal investigation for foreign business tax offences. McCarthy claimed the Biden family received special treatment from the government during misconduct claims.
This impeachment inquiry will allow House investigators to issue court-enforceable subpoenas for documents and testimony. The US Constitution allows presidents to be impeached for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanours," which could result in their removal.
Given the Senate's Democratic majority, ousting President Biden is unlikely. Former President Trump, the first US president impeached twice, was acquitted.
McCarthy's move follows weeks of pressure from right-wing House members, notably Trump ally Matt Gaetz. McCarthy's House majority is small, but centrist Republicans worry that a vigorous impeachment drive may alienate moderate voters. McCarthy may try to satisfy right-wing Republicans before budget conflicts.
However, a formal House authorization vote would put centrist Republicans on record, potentially affecting the 2024 general election.
