I and Priyanka have forgiven Rajiv Gandhi’s assasins, Rahul says

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has said that he and his sister Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra have forgiven the assassins/killers of their father and former prime-minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi, who became Prime Minister by accident when his mother Indira Gandhi fell to her own guards’ bullets in 1984, was assassinated at Sriperumbudur off Chennai on 20th May, 1990 when he was about to address an election meeting; Dhanu, a female suicide bomber, set off the explosion. Seven main accused in the assassination are still languishing in prisons in Tamil Nadu even after 27 years.

On a 5-day trip to South-East Asian countries, Rahul was at Singapore when he interacted with students of Indian Institute of Management. During a casual question-answer session, Rahul replied in the affirmative when a student asked if he had forgiven his father’s killers. “I and Priyanka were in agony and were angry over our father’s killers for many years; now, however, we have forgiven them,” he said.

“We feel the seriousness of the issue only when we personally experience it. When I witnessed LTTE chief Prabhakaran’s demise on TV that realized two issues: why were the Lankan army personnel so brutal in killing them; the second thing that struck me was his family. Despite leading the organization, Prabhakaran was also a human and he too had a family. I could feel how his family would have mourned his demise.

“My father and grandmother fell to terrorists’ bullets as they were fighting for a cause,” Rahul said and added that “Ironically, I was a 14-year old boy who had even played badminton with my grand-mother’s assassins.” He went on to add that his life had changed completely after his father’s demise as he had to remain under a security cover consisting of at least 15 personnel 24 hours a day.
