I don't lift story lines from DVDs: RP Patnaik

  • IndiaGlitz, [Wednesday,March 09 2016]

RP Patnaik is back in news ahead of the release of his directorial Tulasi Dalam. In this romantic-horror, Patnaik portrays the character of Dr. Tilak, a psychic healer. Shot in the vivacious and boisterous backdrop of Las Vegas, Tulasi Dalam stands out as one horror film shot in daytime. It is slated to be released on March 11.

In this exclusive interview to IndiaGlitz, RP fields questions ranging from his latest film to his convictions to many others.

How have you managed to create horror effect in daytime?

Darkness is not a necessary condition to create horror effect. One can create that even in brightness. I have been through such experiences in the past.

There are many bright places in the world. Why have you chosen Las Vegas as the backdrop of them all?

There is no place more grand and brighter than Las Vegas. That's why I wanted to shoot the film in that backdrop. We shot for 44 days. The entire story is set in that place. I wish you will all get to visit this place in your lifetime. When I watched Jai Chiranjeeva, I felt that the Sin City was not explored well. In my film, I have tried to beautifully show a cold mountain in the midst of a desert. Even some of the locals haven't heard of this mountain.

Tulasi Dalam sounds like a holy title. Is there a divine element interspersed into the story?

There definitely is a supernatural element. But whether that is evil or divine must be watched on the screen. (Smiles).

How about the music?

Many people tell me that they are missing my music. They will get to hear my kind of music in Tulasi Dalam.

Why are you not composing music for others nowadays?

Adaganidi ammaina pettadu. I am not the kind who approaches directors/producers for opportunities. If someone feels I can give only 99.99% but some other music director can give 100%, let him go for that music director. In recent times, the two movies which made me feel I should have given the music to, were Manam and Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju.

As a director, where do you derive your inspiration from?

My imagination begins where others' ends. An anti-corruption crusader needn't always be a superman. In Broker, a hero was born among brokers, the usual suspects. In Tulasi Dalam, I am trying to create horror in a bright backdrop. In my film on the media, it's not the journalist but a common man who questions. I have enough ideas for this and my next life. If people watch my movies in theatres, I will be encouraged to make a film every three months. I don't lift story lines from DVDs. T Krishna was a kind of director whose no two films were similar. I am his successor in the film industry.
