I enjoyed playing a hockey player in A1 Express: Lavanya Tripathi

Lavanya Tripathi has played a hockey player in 'A1 Express', which is all set to hit the screens on March 5. In this interview, the actress reveals what made her accept the film, why the sports-based drama is special, teaming up with Sundeep Kishan and more.

How different is the character you have played in 'A1 Express' compared to your previous films?

It's definitely different in a lot of ways. This is not a girl-next-door role. When the film came my way, I felt that it is not only different but also offers me an opportunity to challenge myself. Director Dennis Jeevan's narration bowled me over. My character in the film is pretty straightforward. And this is how I am like in life. In that sense, it's close to the actual me.

How was it working with Sundeep Kishan, with whom you have previously worked on 'Maayavan'?

In 'Maayavan', we had no romantic scenes, given the nature of the movie. In 'A1 Express', there is so much chemistry between us. It was great working with Sundeep Kishan, who is always comfortable to work with. He listens to what others say intently.

What made you accept the film when Dennis Jeevan gave you the narration?

I believed in his story. Dennis is a very positive-minded individual, whom I treat as my brother. He used to multi-task on set. The elements in 'A1 Express' and my character made me do the film.

You have played a hockey player. Are you fond of sports, or are sports new to you?

I like sports. However, I was not well-versed with hockey before. So, I had to train in hockey. A professional helped me get into the groove. I had to look authentic as a hockey player for this film. As part of my homework, I watched hockey matches. That helped me understand the demeanor of players. Doing this role was a new kind of experience, considering that there was no make-up at times.

What does the film show? The trailer hints that Sundeep Kishan's character goes against the rot in the system of the sports universe in India.

'A1 Express' shows that politics in the field of sports is rendering injustice to genuine talents sometimes. The message is so relevant for the present day.

Have you watched the film? What is your takeaway?

I am yet to watch the film. I will do it in a theatre. During the making, I had a sense that the output was coming out extremely well.

Tell us about the film's music.

Hiphop Tamizha always gives his 100% to his work. And he has done a superb job on 'A1 Express'.

You will be seen in an atypical role in 'Chaavu Kaburu Challaga', which, too, will release in March. How do you select scripts?

I have got a very interesting character in 'Chaavu Kaburu Challaga'. Coming to what goes into script selection, I see whether I will enjoy myself playing the character. If the answer is yes and the script is good overall, I do the film. I am open to doing web series if my character is strong. I am up for negative roles, too.
