Idhu Enna Maayam Review

An established director ( A. L . Vijay), a prestigious banner (Magic Frames) a hero who has a good track record (Vikram Prabhu) and some top class technicians have come together for ‘Idhu Enna Maayam’.  The basic theme of the film is how ego tears apart two people who are very much in love with each other.

Arun (Vikram Prabhu) is a brooding young man whose passion is acting in stage plays along with a few friends.  The entire group are financially backward  until one day Arun hits upon an idea to start a new business called UMT where if a client is in love but cannot get the girl the group will stage situations  using Tamil cinema techniques to make a her fall in love with their client.  The business becomes successful and one day Santhosh (Navdeep) approaches them saying that he is in love with a jingle singer called Maya and tells the group that he is ready to spend a crore which they accept.  But the very mention of the name Maya takes Arun back to his college days in Cochin where he falls for a junior Maya (Keerthi Suresh) and after many twists when the two are ready to declare their love a situation drives the lovers apart.  Is Arun’s former love Maya and the one that Santhosh love, the same girl? If so what will Arun do forms the rest of the story.

Vikram Prabhu has mostly done action oriented roles in the past and here in the role of a lovelorn man  he is quite subdued and does what is required but somehow gives an impression of being miscast in this film.  Debutante Keerthi Suresh as Maya is charming and bubbly and is a welcome find for Tamil Cinema. She is equally good as a vibrant college student and then later on as a singer and handles all emotions like a seasoned actress.  Veteran Nasser as Arun’s father and Charlie as an innocent side actor show their experience in their brief roles.  The supporting cast like Lollu Sabha Jeeva, RJ Balaji, Balaji, RJ Arun and the rest of the boys and girls who play Arun’s present day friends and college mates in the flash back are all uniformly good and they are the ones who help move the story with their sincere acting efforts and comedy timing.  Navdeep’s character is not well etched out and it is not his fault that he fails to make an impact.

G.V.Prakash’s background score is reminiscent of his older films and his songs unfortunately are not up to the high standards he has set before.  Nirav Shah is responsible for providing uniformly clean images throughout the film.  Editor Antony has done his best to make a wayward script make sense on the screen.

The end result of director A.L. Vijay ‘s ‘Idhu Enna Maayam’ is far from inspiring. When sitting through the film  It is hard to believe that a seasoned writer-director is behind it  and only in the few comedy scenes the A.L. Vijay touch is visible.

Verdict: Keerthi Suresh and the supporting cast are great and the comedy scenes bring out genuine laughter.
