Ilaiyaraaja vs Makers of Good Bad Ugly: A copyright case

Send us your feedback to audioarticles@vaarta.com

Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja has issued a legal notice demanding ₹5 crore in compensation from the team behind the film 'Good Bad Ugly.' The film was released last weekend and is performing well at the box office. However, Ilaiyaraaja raised objection for using songs without permission.
The notice also calls for a public apology within a week. However, the film's producers claim they have a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the music label, asserting the usage was legally obtained.
The songs in question are 'Otha Roopa Tharen', 'Ilamai Idho Idho', and 'En Jodi Manja Kuruvi'.
Ilaiyaraaja has done this in the past also, where he asked for compensation and acknowledgement of his work. It seems that there are some loopholes in the copyright laws. The audio companies claim that they hold full rights but then, the music composers also claim that they also hold the rights.
As of now, the team did not release a statement but the film's producer interacted with a leading website sharing their version. We have to see if there will be a new twist to this controversy.
