The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has officially inaugurated the 'Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research' on its Chennai campus. The foundation stone was laid by the legendary composer himself, alongside Tripura Governor Indirasena Reddy Nallu, on May 20th.

This new center aims to blend traditional music education with cutting-edge technology, reflecting a vision shared by both Ilaiyaraaja and IIT-M director V Kamakoti. Kamakoti emphasized the need for a deeper understanding of music through research, including the exploration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in music.

Ilaiyaraaja, known for his unparalleled contributions to Indian film music, expressed his hope that the center would empower aspiring musicians to pursue their passion. He recounted his own journey, sharing how he and his brother traveled to Chennai in their youth to learn music, despite his lack of formal training. He stressed the importance of passion and determination, stating, “If you can make one thirsty, he will find a way to quench it. If you have the passion to learn, you will achieve great heights.” Ilaiyaraaja envisions IIT-M becoming a breeding ground for future musical talents, echoing his belief that music is as innate as breathing.

Ilaiyaraaja has pledged to contribute his musical notes to the center, further solidifying his commitment to nurturing young musicians. He has also been busy with his upcoming project, 'Viduthalai Part 2', directed by Vetri Maaran. In a recent announcement, he revealed the remarkable feat of composing a symphony in just 35 days, showcasing his enduring creative energy.

While celebrating this new chapter in his career, Ilaiyaraaja has also been involved in legal battles concerning copyright issues. Notably, he issued a legal notice to the producers of Rajinikanth's film 'Coolie' regarding copyright infringement.

The establishment of the Ilaiyaraaja Centre marks a significant step towards merging traditional music education with technological advancements, creating a unique learning experience that promises to shape the future of Indian music.
