India creates history by winning first-ever bilateral ODI series in South Africa

‘Team India’ created history yesterday at Port Elizabeth in South Africa by winning the fifth one-dayer of the 6-match ODI cricket series by 73 runs and thus winning the series 4-1. With one more to go on Friday, India has now won the series, accomplishing the feat of winning a bilateral ODI series for the first time against South Africa in South Africa.

South Africa had won the rain-hit fourth ODI at Johannesburg and kept the series alive over the weekend. Yesterday, South Africa won the toss and asked India to bat first.  India started off well but stuttered in the final 15 overs (as it has been doing at times) to finish with 274 for 7 with useful contributions from Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Shreyas Iyer. Earlier, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan had made thirties.

Rohit Sharma, who had been off-colour for the first four matches, came into his own and hit his 17th ODI century but got out at a wrong time for 115.  Ngidi took four wickets for South Africa which started the chase very well as the openers put on 52 runs. They lost 3 wickets cheaply, including that of star batsman de Villiers and the floodgates opened once the 4th wicket stand of Amla and David Miller was broken.

Hardik Pandya picked up two important wickets while wrist-spinning twins Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav came into their own picking up six of the 10 South African wickets. Fittingly enough, Chahal trapped pacer Morne Morkel for a duck in the 3rd ball of the 43rd over to signal India’s win in the match as well as the series.  Virat Kohli celebrated with others by pumping fists.  Rohit Sharma was the ‘Man of the Match’.
