Recently, reports stated that India-made eye drops have been found to be contaminated. Some users in the US reportedly developed eye infections (adverse events) following the use of some eye drops made in India. Even blindness has been reported, if some reports are to be believed. This comes just months after a huge controversy took root when cough syrup-related deaths in Gambia and Uzbekistan were reported.

The US FDA has already asked Americans not to use the eye drops made by Global Healthcare Pharma and Delsam Pharma. The CDC said that bacterial infection may be spreading through eye drops made in India.

In his latest interview, the head of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) told Mint that the "entire international media, particularly in the US, is highlighting the issue". This must be a cause for concern.

As per commentator Diva Jain, India must get its act together. "Pharma is one of our rare export champions. If there is wrongdoing, the Government of India should impose exemplary punishment. If not, then dispel these doubts emphatically. Head in the sand approach from GoI not good enough," she writes.
