Indian-born Parag Agrawal has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter, following the departure of the social media platform’s co-founder Jack Dorsey, who served as the company’s CEO for 16 years.

Jack announced the news in a lengthy statement on Twitter which read, “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders. The board ran a rigorous process considering all options and unanimously appointed Parag. He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs. Parag has been behind every critical decision that helped turn this company around. He's curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware, and humble. He leads with heart and soul, and is someone I learn from daily. My trust in him as our CEO is bone deep.”

Parag Agrawal graduated from IIT Bombay before earning a PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. He has previously worked in Microsoft, Yahoo, and AT&T labs before joining Twitter in 2011. Parag was later appointed as Twitter’s CTO on March 8, 2018. He took to the social media platform to thank Jack for his continued mentorship and friendship. “Our purpose has never been more important. Our people and culture are unlike anything in the world. There is no limit to what we can do together. Let’s show the world Twitter’s full potential,” the newly appointed CEO wrote.
