Ulaga nayagan Kamal Haasan and director Shankar had collaborated for the first time in 1996 for the action-packed vigilante movie Indian, which was a huge blockbuster. Today, the actor-director combo begin shooting for the sequel, and director Vasantha Balan, an erstwhile associate of Shankar revealed an interesting fact on the movie.

As Vasantha Balan reminisces, post the success of Gentleman in three languages, Shankar was asked by Superstar Rajnikanth if he had a story for him, and Shankar had penned a story titled "Periya Manushan" which impressed Rajni. However due to his busy schedule, Rajni couldn't immediately start shooting for the movie, and Shankar had decided to go ahead with Periya Manushan after Kadhalan.

After plans to cast Nagarjuna or Venkatesh as the son and Doctor Rajasekhar as the father, followed by suggestions to cast Karthik and Sathyaraj as the son and father, finally, Kamal Haasan came onboard, and that was how Indian 2 began, revealed Vasantha Balan in his Facebook post. Indian 2 which is bankrolled by Lyca productions also stars Kajal Aggarwal and has music by Anirudh and cinematography by Ravi Varman.
