The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, which was scheduled to begin on March 29, was initially postponed to mid-April following the global concern over the coronavirus pandemic. The BCCI then announced the official suspension of the tournament until further notice.

While the ICC and BCCI have been deliberating over the fate of the T20 World Cup that has been scheduled to take place from October 18 to November 15 in Australia and the IPL 2020 that was rescheduled to begin on April 15 respectively, one major IPL shareholder has reportedly suggested the idea of the tournament being held entirely in Mumbai after October. "It's at a very preliminary stage but if IPL happens in India and by October, situation is under control in Mumbai, there are four top-class floodlit grounds available in Mumbai. The logistics for BCCI, broadcasters (Star Sports), maintaining a bio-bubble, everything could be managed smoothly," a BCCI official reportedly mentioned. Mumbai is one of the worst affected cities in India as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Hence, the likelihood of the tournament being conducted solely in Mumbai is slim.

BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had earlier stated that the premier league will somehow be conducted by the end of the year, even if it involves the loss of Rs. 4000 crore as the tournament would have to be conducted in the absence of spectators. "Obviously, everything depends on Covid-19 situation in Mumbai. But if there are no spectators allowed and a bio-bubble is created, then Mumbai won't be a bad option," the BCCI official further added.
