In an apparent attempt to put to rest rumours to the contrary, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has stated that it is indeed mandatory for people to link their respective Aadhaar numbers with their corresponding bank accounts in nationalized and private banks across the country.

A report said a few days back that a Right To Information (RTI) query posed to RBI received a reply stating that it wasn’t mandatory to link Aadhaar with bank accounts. There was huge commotion and chaos among the people whether or not to go ahead with the process of linking Aadhaar numbers with their respective bank accounts.

The Centre has made Aadhaar mandatory for the people to benefit from its various people-centric schemes. In an effort to set things right, the RBI issued a statement on Saturday stating that as per the amended rules which came into force from 01st June, 2017 to arrest money fraud and other things, it is mandatory for all to link Aadhaar numbers with their respective Bank accounts.

The RBI has also asked Banks to consider it as an ‘emergency instruction’ and act accordingly to link the account holders’ bank accounts with their Aadhaar numbers.
