Sony Pictures is taking a deep dive into the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe, bringing back Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio to revive their beloved roles in the franchise. The upcoming installment, helmed by Jonathan Entwistle, known for acclaimed teen TV dramas, will merge the original saga's mythos into a new storyline.

The search for the central character has commenced globally, with Chan and Macchio initiating it through an introductory video. Rob Lieber, renowned for works like Peter Rabbit and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, has penned the script. The narrative details are currently kept under wraps.

The new tale will shift to the East Coast, focusing on a Chinese teenager discovering strength and guidance through martial arts and a resilient mentor. The production, spearheaded by Karen Rosenfelt, eyes a December 13, 2024, release with plans for a spring shoot.

The Karate Kid franchise kicked off in 1984, featuring Macchio as Daniel LaRusso mentored by Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita. The series flourished with sequels and saw a resurgence through Cobra Kai, a YouTube and Netflix hit. Sony rejuvenated the title in 2010 with a remake starring Jaden Smith, directed by Chan.

Macchio, known for The Outsiders and My Cousin Vinny, and Chan, celebrated for his acrobatic stunts and Rush Hour series, are iconic figures in their own right. Chan received an Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, marking a milestone for Chinese actors.

As the project takes shape, the talent is backed by top-tier representation, showcasing the significant anticipation surrounding the movie.
