During the golden era of Tamil cinema, when top stars like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, and Gemini Ganesan were dominating the screen, another unique actor made his mark—Jaishankar, fondly known as the “James Bond of Tamil Nadu.” Known for his roles in spy action and thrillers, one of his notable films is ‘Vairam’, his 104th movie.

‘Vairam’ is a Tamil remake of the Hindi hit ‘Victoria No. 203’, which originally starred Ashok Kumar and Saira Banu. In the Tamil version, Jayalalithaa took on the role played by Saira Banu, with a strong supporting cast including Srikanth, M.R.R. Vasu, Ashokan, R.S. Manohar, S.V. Ramadas, Thengai Srinivasan, S.V. Sahasranamam, and Sachu.

The story follows R.S. Manohar’s character as he plans the theft of a diamond worth ₹3 crores. He sends someone to steal it but also plots to kill the thief and retrieve the diamond himself. The incident leads to a mysterious and thrilling series of events. The film, packed with suspense and action, captivated audiences.

Produced by Vijaya-Suri Combines and directed by T.R. Ramanna, the screenplay and dialogues were penned by T.N. Balu. The soundtrack was composed by T.R. Pappa with lyrics by Kannadasan. Songs like ‘Iravum Muzhudhum Virundhu Vaikkiren’, ‘Paarthen Oru Azhagi’, and ‘Dhana Kidaichathayya’ became popular. Jayalalithaa and SPB’s duet ‘Iru Maangani Pol’ was especially well-received.

Jayalalithaa drew attention for her glamorous attire in one of the songs, even appearing in male disguise in some scenes. Actress Shoba played her sister in the film. Ashokan’s comedic role was also appreciated. Released on May 24, 1974, the film was a box office success.
