The much-anticipated Vijay-starrer 'Jananaayagan' is set to hit theaters in 2026. The reason for this delay has now been revealed. The film's shooting is expected to be completed by May 2024, after which Vijay plans to focus entirely on his political career.
Earlier, the movie’s team had announced an October 2024 release, but now it has been confirmed that this will not be possible. Instead, 'Jananaayagan' is scheduled for a Pongal 2026 release.
Netflix has acquired the OTT rights for the film. Since the platform has already finalized its 2024 release lineup, it proposed acquiring the movie's digital rights if the theatrical release was postponed to next year. Based on this, the production team decided on a 2026 release.
The official OTT contract with Netflix is expected to be signed soon. Due to challenging market conditions, selling OTT rights has become tougher. Thus, the production team has chosen to prioritize securing an OTT deal before setting a release date.
This situation confirms that even a major Vijay film follows the current industry trend, where streaming platforms significantly influence theatrical release plans.
'Jananaayagan' is being produced by KVN Productions and directed by H. Vinoth. The cast includes Vijay, Bobby Deol, Gautham Menon, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Priyamani. Sathyan Sooryan is handling cinematography, and Anirudh is composing the music.
Fans will now have to wait until 2026 to see Vijay’s political-themed movie in theaters.
