A set of strugglers in filmdom got together to make 'Jathi'. Vijayaraghava the director explaining about the film says "The hero's mother has a passion for music, so the title is relevant. It's a love story, where a small mistake snowballs into a major misunderstanding. Jathi which is heart of music and similarly understanding each other well is important in romance". Vijayaraghava worked as an assistant to many directors, before branching out on his own. His technical team and hero are all freshers.

Most of the shooting took place in Pondicherry. The director narrated a scene to show the characters of the hero Sathya and heroine Sujitha. Sujita standing by the roadside is trying to start her two-wheeler. Seeing her struggle, Sathya on his motorbike comes to her aid, sets it right, and starts it for her. Sujita just rides away. Taken aback , Sathya chases her on his two-wheeler and stops her. He asks as to why she did not thank him. Sujita replies that since she hadn't asked for his help, she didn't think it necessary to thank him. Hearing the argument , Sita who happens to pass that way, sees them and tries to patch up the matter. But with Sujita sticking to her stance, Sita turns to Satya and tells him to drop the issue. The climax was shot at a railway station

Satya, who plays the male lead graduated from the acting school, run by dance choreographer Kala. Sujita plays the heroine and the supporting cast has Ambika, Sita, Nizhalgal Ravi, Azhagu, Rajiv, and Ajay Ratnam

The film has music by debutant Kalaivani, art-work by T Rajan, editing by S Ashok Mehta, stunt by Super Subbarayan and camerawork by Chithirai Selvan.

The shooting is almost completed, only the songs remain. Ireland and Rajasthan are the locations chosen to picturise two of the songs. The film is produced by Vasanth Rani, Guru Dinakar, and R Muthuraman for Seven Horse films.
