Justice Indu Malhotra-first woman lawyer to become Supreme Court

With the Union Law Ministry accepting the recommendation of Judges’ Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, senior advocate Indu Malhotra is all set to become the first woman lawyer to be directed appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

The Collagiuam had also recommended appointment of 12 Judges at various High Courts across the country.  The Law Ministry had earlier asked the Collagium comprising CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Chellameswar and Justice Ranjan Gogoi (both of whom revolted against the CJI a few months back) to recommend names of suitable Judges to fill up vacancies at various High Courts in the States.

Collegium has now recommended four Judges and eight other legal officials to be appointed at various High Courts.  Advocate Pugazhendi and judicial officer Sarojini Devi have been posted to the High Court of Chennai as its new Judges.  Likewise, the Gujarat High Court has got five new Judges while Chattisgarh High Court and Bombay High Court have got four and one Judges (respectively in that order).

Following the Law Ministry’s consent, Justice Indu Malhotra is all set to take oath as the first-ever woman Judge at the Supreme Court of India.  In all probability, she is likely to take up her new assignment from tomorrow (Friday).
