Kamal Haasan’s petition seeking permission to screen his film Thuglife in Karnataka, along with a request for security at theatres, was heard in the Karnataka High Court.

During the hearing, the judge questioned Haasan’s earlier comments, asking, “What kind of language researcher is Kamal Haasan? What proof is there that Kannada originated from Tamil?” The judge then suggested, “This issue stems from your comments—why not apologize and settle the matter?” The court then adjourned the session until 2:30 PM for further proceedings.

When the hearing resumed, Kamal Haasan’s legal team made it clear that the actor would not issue an apology. They also informed the court that the release of Thuglife in Karnataka would be postponed by one week.

In response, the judge directed the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, the state government, and Kamal Haasan’s representatives to engage in discussions to resolve the matter amicably. The next hearing has been scheduled for June 10.
