Theaters in Tamil Nadu have remained shut for nearly 6 months due to the COVID pandemic's second wave. While many cinema halls across the other parts of the country have already started functioning, the Government of Tamil Nadu permitted theaters to function only a couple of days ago. Hence the movie halls in TN will be opened this week gradually.

Owing to the reopening of theaters, plenty of International films have hit the big screens and contributing to revive the theatrical business. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar's 'Bell Bottom' is the first biggie from India to release after the second wave. Bell Bottom was released on August 19 in theaters and managed to collect a sum of nearly 15 crores in the opening weekend which gives hope to theater owners.

A huge number of films from K-town are awaiting theatrical release. Previously, a handful of Tamil movies have confirmed direct TV/OTT premiere on the special occasion of Vinayagar Chathurthi (September 10). Now as theaters in TN are being reopened this week starting today, some big movies are eyeing a theatrical release on the Vinayagar Chathurthi weekend: Thalaivi, Laabam, Sivakumarin Sabadham and Kodiyil Oruvan.

Among the 4 films, 'Thalaivi' is the first flick to officially confirm theatrical release on September 10. Thalaivi is the biography film of J. Jayalalithaa, the vintage actress and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Kangana Ranaut plays the role of Jayalalithaa and Aravind Swami sports the role of Makkal Thilagam MGR. GV Prakash is scoring music for this biopic helmed by director AL Vijay.

On the other hand, the other three films are tentatively slated to hit the big screens on Vinayagar Chathurthi weekend. Laabam is a political thriller starring Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan in lead roles and is the last film of late filmmaker SP Jananathan. Sivakumar Sabadham is an upcoming comedy entertainer by Hiphop Thamizha Adhi starring himself as the lead and Kodiyil Oruvan is an action drama with Vijay Antony and Aathmika as the leads.
