Sunjay Kapur, prominent industrialist and ex-husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, has reportedly passed away in England due to a heart attack. The news was shared on Thursday by businessman and author Suhel Seth on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
“Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England: a terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues @sonacomstar …Om Shanti,” Suhel Seth posted.
Sunjay Kapur was the CEO of Sixt India and a notable figure in the automotive and business sectors. He is also known for his past marriage to Karisma Kapoor, with whom he shares two children — daughter Samaira and son Kiaan.
The couple tied the knot on 29 September 2003 in a lavish Sikh wedding ceremony held at Karisma’s ancestral residence, Krishna Raj Bungalow in Mumbai. However, their marriage went through a tumultuous journey. After filing for divorce through mutual consent in 2014, both Sunjay and Karisma withdrew their consent a year later. Their divorce was eventually finalized in 2016 after a prolonged legal battle.
During the divorce proceedings, Karisma Kapoor filed a domestic violence complaint against Sunjay and his mother, alleging physical abuse and infidelity. She also lodged a dowry harassment case, resulting in a summons being issued to Sunjay by Mumbai police.
Before her marriage to Sunjay, Karisma Kapoor was engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan in 2002, but the engagement was called off within a few months without any official explanation.
Sunjay Kapur’s sudden demise marks a significant loss to the business world and those who knew him personally. Condolences are pouring in from across industries as the news continues to spread.
