Karnataka CM says State would oppose setting up Cauvery Management Board

Karnataka chief-minister Siddaramaiah has said that the State would explore all available options before it in opposing the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board by the Centre.

Delivering a hard-hitting verdict on Friday in the decade-long review petitions filed by four States on the verdict of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal, the Supreme Court had directed the Centre to set up a Cauvery Management Board within six weeks. It also added that Cauvery River was a ‘national property’ and no particular State can lay its claim for it.

Talking to newsmen in Bangalore Siddaramaiah said that it was a normal practice to set up a Management Board or a Supervisory Committee when it came to dealing with such issues. “However, as there has been a Committee already in existence, there is no need for a Management Board. We would certainly opposite setting up a Board.

“Solution to the issue ought to be found by integrating and bringing together all the States whose irrigation processes are affected,” Siddaramaiah opined.  He also said that contrary to what appeared in the print media, the Court didn’t fix any time-frame (of 6 weeks) to set up a Cauvery Management Board. “Soon after the verdict was out, I discussed the issue with legal experts and am continuing to do so,” he concluded.
