10-year-old girl dies of snake bite in classroom, protests erupt

Following widespread protests over the death of a 10-year-old in northern Kerala's Wayanad due to a snake bite, one of the headteachers of the school and a doctor have been suspended by the Kerala Government.

The victim, identified as 10-year-old Shehala Sherin, was a student at a government school in Wayanad. The school management and a teacher have been blamed for negligence by the parents of the girl and the other students of the school, as the teacher reportedly continued to take the class despite the girl crying out in pain. According to a report, though Shehla's parents rushed her to four hospitals, no anti-venom was administered and they were told to take the child to the Kozhikode Medical college hospital, about 90 km from Sulthan Bathery. Shehala's father said she died before reaching the medical college.

"Though a teacher in the school has been suspended, that won't suffice. We demand that a case be registered and more action should be coming against teachers and medical professionals. Our dear schoolmate who died under unfortunate circumstances should get justice and we will continue our protest, till tough actions are taken," one of the students leading the protest mentioned.
