Legal Storm Hits Nayanthara’s Wedding Doc: Netflix, Rowdy Pictures Face Copyright Heat

Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale, the much-hyped wedding documentary featuring South Indian superstar Nayanthara and filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, is once again in the news – this time for all the wrong reasons.

The Madras High Court has issued notices to Netflix and Tarc Studios after a copyright infringement case was filed by AP International, the producers of the 2005 Rajinikanth blockbuster Chandramukhi. The petition alleges that behind-the-scenes footage from Chandramukhi was used in the documentary without prior permission. AP International claims they had already served legal warnings and demanded ?5 crore in compensation, but the documentary still proceeded with the unauthorized content. The court has granted two weeks for the respondents to file their reply.

This is not the only legal trouble surrounding the documentary. Earlier, Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films filed a separate petition accusing the makers of using a three-second clip from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan — also starring Nayanthara — without obtaining rights. That case names Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan, and their banner Rowdy Pictures, seeking ?10 crore in damages.

What began as a celebration of love and stardom has now turned into a legal quagmire, with the documentary’s focus shifting from the personal to the problematic. As both copyright disputes progress, the industry watches closely to see how this high-profile controversy unfolds.
