Munich-based company Lilium has launched a five-seater air taxi following their succesful maiden flight with an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) device after extensive ground testing. Powered by 36 all-electric jet engines, this jet is also a “remarkably efficient horizontal or cruise flight,” according to Lilium.

The new technology means travel within cities that is faster, cheaper and more eco-friendly will be made possible. With a range of 300 km, a high speed of 300 km/h, and a fixed wing design, this jet may be able to complete longer journeys than others in the market. It can also act as a solution to the incessant traffic in cities.

Operated from the ground by batteries and remote control, the next step for this device will be to meet commercial aircraft safety standards. Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand expects the jets to be in full operation in cities by the year 2025.
