Mad Square is a sequel to the fun filled Mad releases last year and bagged super-hit. While MAD is all about college life, MAD Square takes the fun beyond college life and into the chaos of adulthood. Directed by Kalyan Shankar, the film brings back the gang for another round of mischief, this time revolving around marriage and a wild trip to Goa. But does it manage to recreate the magic of its predecessor? Let’s see how the film is.
Story
Ganesh also known as Laddu (Vishnu Oi), is about to get married. However, his friends—Manoj (Ram Nithin), Ashok (Narne Nithin) and Damodar (Sangeeth Sobhan)—arrive just in time to create chaos. After an unexpected turn of events, the friends convince Laddu to go on his honeymoon to Goa as planned. What starts as a fun trip soon takes a wild turn with unexpected twists, including a robbery. The story revolves around how the group handles the situation while maintaining their friendship and humor.
Analysis
Mad Square kicks off with an energetic introduction by staying true to the tone of its predecessor. The film begins with Laddu’s (Vishnu Oi) wedding preparations setting the stage for some light hearted chaos. The initial sequences are engaging by delivering a few well-placed comedic moments. However as the story progresses, the humor starts to feel repetitive. While some jokes work well, others appear forced by disrupting the film’s natural flow.
The movie’s strength lies in its characters and their chemistry. Sangeeth Sobhan and Vishnu Oi steal the show with their impeccable timing, elevating even the weaker comedy bits. Narne Nithin and Ram Nithin, though present, have limited scope making their impact less significant. Despite its comedic premise, the film struggles to maintain the same level of engagement throughout.
The second half introduces a crime subplot involving a robbery, adding a layer of unpredictability. However this track doesn’t blend seamlessly with the rest of the story. Sunil, Satyam Rajesh and Subhalekha Sudhakar bring in their own quirks but the humor here becomes repetitive. The screenplay feels stretched making the film feel longer than its actual runtime.
Music by Bheems Ceciroleo and background score by Thaman help maintain an energetic pace but they can’t compensate for the film’s uneven storytelling. While the cinematography and editing are decent, the film’s predictable humor makes it drag in parts.
Despite its flaws, Mad Square offers scattered moments of fun especially in the climax, which takes a humorous approach to friendship. The film ends on a high note teasing another sequel.
Verdict
Mad Square offers moments of fun but struggles with consistency. The performances, especially by Sangeeth Sobhan and Vishnu keep the film engaging. If you enjoy light hearted, mindless comedy, this film is worth a watch. But keep your expectations in check.
