Following a 4-1 defeat at Watford that left Manchester United at the seventh place in the Premier League, the Old Trafford club sacked manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday.

The Norwegian football manager, despite signing a three-year contract extension until 2024 in July, was sacked after Manchester United lost five of their last seven league games, against Aston Villa, Leicester City, Liverpool and Manchester City, besides Watford. Former midfielder Michael Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer’s coaching team, will now take charge of the team ahead of the Champions League clash away to Villarreal on Tuesday. “Manchester United announces that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as Manager,” the club said in a statement.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success,” the statement further added. Speaking about his time at Manchester United, Ole Gunnar mentioned, “This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.”
