Not so Quirky

Mappillai, is the remake of superstar's classic movie apparently with the same name. Let's see this new version of `Mappillai' has the touch of music where the old version had.

1. Aaru Padai

Singers: Vijay Yesudas & Mukesh

Mukesh's opening is good; still the song is not quite catchy. Regardless, it is a number where you can listen to different instruments such as an orchestra of temple bells, cymbals and of course tavil and nadaswaram. The song is sung by Vijay Yesudas and the lyrics is penned by Viveka.

2. Love Love

Singers: Rahul & Rita

Love Love is a bit of a mix of `Theepidikka' from `Arinthum Ariyamalum' with a hint of `Andangakka' from `Anniyan'. It's definitely an upbeat track but the lyrics are not so appropriate. However to sum up vocals by Rahul and Rita are well executed, especially in the chorus which is unbelievably catchy.

3. Onnu Rendu

Singers: Mukesh & Saindhavi

A kuthu number, a typical folk type song, suggesting competition spirit through its lyrics (boys vs. girls)! Nothing special about the song as it's a usual commercial track. The song sounds similar to Mani Sharma's `Parrare' in Telugu movie `Stalin'. Even the chorus parts and instruments are orchestrated with the same approach.

4. Ready Readya

Singers: Ranjith & Saindhavi

Despite being a peppy number, Ready Readya is in fact the slowest track on this album. Sharma tried to mix as many genres as possible into the track and some of transitions from verse to chorus or chorus to interlude are abrupt. The remix of this track is a dance floor mix which would be a hit among party-goers.

5. Ennoda Rasi Remix

Singers: Ranjith, & Chorus

The song needs no introduction. `Ennoda Rasi' is an evergreen chartbuster for Illayaraja's musical score and Superstar Rajnikanth's dance. The song has been a favourite one for everyone, especially across the suburban areas and now Dhanush has chosen it. Ranjith spills some extra beans with Mani Sharma adding some touch during interludes.

6. Mappillai Theme Song

Mani Sharma doesn't prove anything different here as he beats the same bush here. The lyrics are so stereotyped. The music director has already used the same pattern of music in his previous Tamil movies. But with the visuals and placement theme song, it may grab everyone's attention.

On the whole, `Mappillai' doesn't have any song worthy hearing to. Except the `remix' (not the exact terms to say remix) of `Ennoda Raasi', none of them captures our senses.
