Malayalam actor Mohanlal has issued an apology following controversy surrounding his film, “L2: Empuraan,” which reportedly includes scenes referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots. The film, which stars Mohanlal and actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released on March 27 and has faced criticism from right-wing supporters for its depiction of the events that occurred in Gujarat during Narendra Modi's tenure as Chief Minister.
Despite the backlash, “Empuraan” has seen significant box office success. In response to ongoing protests, it has been announced that several scenes—reportedly 17 in total—will be removed from the film. These changes come amid increasing pressure from Hindutva groups who are displeased with the movie’s content.
Reacting to the controversy, Mohanlal expressed regret through a social media post, stating, "I have come to know that certain political and social references in ‘Empuraan,’ the sequel to ‘Lucifer,’ have deeply disturbed some of my dear fans. As an artist, it is my responsibility to ensure that my work does not spread hate against any political party, ideology, or group. We, the team of Empuraan, truly regret the pain caused and have decided to remove the concerned scenes."
He added, "I have lived as one among you for more than four decades in cinema. Your love and trust are my only strength. I believe there is no one beyond Mohanlal in your hearts."
