Mohanlal's latest film, Empuraan, premiered yesterday with massive fan enthusiasm. Touted as one of the most anticipated Malayalam films, the hype surrounding it was sky-high even before its release, thanks to record-breaking advance bookings. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan is the sequel to the hit film Lucifer.
The movie opened to mixed reactions. While some critics praised the stylish execution, others felt it lacked depth in storyline. Certain controversial scenes also drew criticism for Prithviraj. Despite that, the film had an explosive start at the box office. As per industry reports, the movie earned nearly ₹65 crores globally on its opening day alone.
This makes Empuraan the biggest opener in Malayalam cinema history, far surpassing previous records. For example, Prithviraj’s own film The Goat Life (Aadujeevitham) earned ₹64.14 crores over its first four days, whereas Empuraan achieved that in just one day.
The movie also registered record-breaking openings in Kerala and performed exceptionally well in overseas markets. With mixed reviews but massive box office momentum, it remains to be seen how the film continues to fare in the coming days.
