Netflix announced the final season of The Crown will air in two parts, Part 1 on November 16 and Part 2 on December 14. The show is split for the first time.

A preview clip was released alongside the announcement. To reflect the show's timeline and characters over the decades, The Crown casts Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton every two seasons.

The fifth and final series will cover 1997–2005, with Part 1 starring Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, Dominic West as Charles, Jonathan Pryce as Philip, Lesley Manville as Margaret, and Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth. It will also introduce Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards as young Prince William and Harry.

Diana and Dodi's relationship before their 1997 car tragedy will be explored in the season, but not their influence. Four weeks later, Part 2 covers the monarchy's struggles, including Prince William's return to Eton after his mother's death and Charles' marriage to Queen Camilla.

The series will end with a new cast for the younger set: Ed McVey as Prince William, Luther Ford as Prince Harry, and Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton.

Netflix also released gorgeous posters featuring Debicki as Diana on Mohamed's yacht and Staunton facing a dazzling light.

A sixth season of The Crown, originally planned to complete the series, was ordered in 2020. Peter Morgan had room to properly develop the tale with this extension.

The last season of The Crown will air in November and December 2023.
