No stay order from SC on Aadhaar for social welfare schemes

The Supreme Court has refused to pass an interim order on making the Aadhaar card mandatory for availing social welfare benefits and has extended the deadline by a month for those currently availing of these benefits without the Aadhaar.
Shyam Divan had petitioned asking that the government not deny social welfare benefits to those who currently avail it, on the basis of not having Aadhaar. A vacation bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and Navin Sinha said that a stay order cannot be passed based on “mere apprehensions” and that petitioners can complain if they find anyone being deprived of the benefits due to them.
