The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced that starting in 2028, a new Oscar category will be introduced to honor Achievement in Stunt Design. This is the first time in Oscar history that stunt coordination and design will be formally recognized with its own award.

The first Oscar for Best Stunt Design will be presented during the 100th Academy Awards ceremony, which will take place in 2028. This award will recognize excellence in stunt choreography for films released in 2027. This marks a significant milestone in celebrating the contributions of stunt professionals to the film industry.

Until now, there has been no Oscar category for stunts. Instead, stunt work has been recognized by industry-specific awards like the Taurus World Stunt Awards. With the inclusion of this new category, the Oscars aim to highlight the creativity, risk, and skill involved in designing and performing action sequences.

In a promotional post shared on the Academy's official social media handle, it was stated: “Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars. The Academy has created a new annual award for Achievement in Stunt Design—beginning with the 100th Oscars in 2028, honoring films released in 2027.”

This move has been widely appreciated within the film community and is expected to further elevate and legitimize the art of stunt work in cinema.
