Chinmayi slams world renowned poet for raping his Tamil maid and writing about it

Chinmayi is a strong advocate against sexual crimes against women ever since on October 18th 2018, she alleged veteran lyricist Vairamuthu of abusing her in her teens. She is one of the pioneers of the Me Too Movement in South Indian cinema and now many common women too have joined her in her crusade against preying men.

Chinmayi has slammed world renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda who has written in his memoirs that during a visit to Sri Lanka he had raped his Tamil maid though he later regretted it.

Chinmayi has written on social media "Got to know today that celebrated poet Pablo Neruda raped his Tamil housekeeper when he was in Sri Lanka as a diplomat and wrote about it in his memoirs. Source - Memoirs of Pablo Neruda. A version of that happens today when ‘machans’ gather and talk about how many or how ‘correct’ a ‘figure’. (Tamil) Which ‘figure’ is easy If you don’t speak Tamil you wouldn’t understand it. A woman is a ‘figure’ to ‘correct’. Or a women is an object for ‘padeyadam’.

The multiple award winning singer has added "A Nobel Prize Winner could write in his memoir that he raped a woman. And still be regarded as one of the greats. And people whine BUT WOMEN ARE EVERYWHERE!! WHY DO YOU NEED FEMINISM??? Well. You’d be surprised how many ‘great men’ are sex offenders."

According to author Charis McGowan "Pablo Neruda, was the Chilean Nobel Prize-winning poet who became a symbol of resistance for the people of Latin America. Che Guevera read Neruda's poem to his first lover when he was 17 and later throughout his life, would carry Neruda's poetry with him.". Well his actions were not that noble were they and he still is revered in spite of hurting a maid in the cruelest way one could.

I saw some people were reciting Neruda poems so I thought I'd repost this. TW: sexual violence Those who know of Pablo Neruda, know him as the Chilean Nobel Prize winner poet who became a symbol of resistance for the people of Latin America. Che Guevera read Neruda's poem to his first lover when he was 17 and later throughout his life, would carry Neruda's poetry with him, even during times of war. In Washinton D.C., a bust of Neruda stands in commemoration of him. And in the show "How I Met Your Mother", Ted Mosby's favorite poem is revealed to be by Neruda.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What people should know before idolizing him is that in 1929, when Pablo Neruda was in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as a diplomat, he raped his Tamil maid and then wrote about it in his memoirs - a passage that has largely gone unnoticed..or ignored and even today, is barely mentioned.⁣ ⁣⁣ In his memoirs, he writes how one morning his maid arrives and.. "I decided to go all the way. I got a strong grip on her wrist and stared into her eyes. There was no language I could talk with her. She let me lead her, without a smile, and she was soon naked on my bed. Her skinny waist, her full hips, the brimming cups of her breasts, made her like one of the millennial sculptures from southern India. The encounter was of a man with a statue. Her eyes stayed open the whole time impassible. She was right to despise me. The experience was not repeated.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Source: Memoirs by Pablo Neruda (pg. 99-100) and The Guardian, "Poet, hero, rapist - outrage over Chilean plan to rename airport after Neruda" by Charis McGowan
