Parvathamma Rajakumar no more, Pillar departs

One of the most prominent ladies of Kannada filmdom, Dr Rajakumar wife – Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar breathed her last at 4.40 am on 31st May, 2017 after battling for life for 16 days at MS Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru. At Kanteerava Studio where Dr Rajakumar Memorial is formed, at the same place Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar will be buried today evening. Two eyes of Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar were donated like Dr Rajakumar eyes were donated after death.
The 78 years Shakthi Devathe` (She formed Shakthi Dhama` for women in distress in Mysuru) was suffering from cancer. She is the pillar of Kannada cinema like how Dr Rajakumar was icon of Kannada cinema.

Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar body is brought to Sadashivanagara residence early morning on May 31, for public and dignitaries darshan at Poornapragna College grounds it is placed for a few hours. The procession starts from 4 pm and at 6 pm the burial is taking place.

Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar pillar of Dr Rajakumar family passing away has left a strong void. There cannot be another woman like Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar!
The illness in the last few days and the cancer disease affected the legendary Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar for a long time. She was admitted to MS Ramaiah Hospital where she breathed last. At the same place Dr Rajakumar also breathed last on April 12, 2006. Born in Saligrama on December 6, 1939, the mother of Dr Shiv, Raghanna, Puneeth Rajakumar, Lakshmi and Poornima battled for life for a long time.

The first ever real female film entrepreneur in Karnataka Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar with a rural backdrop, housewife has become the lord of the biggest film empire in the Industry. Her managerial skills are proverbial. She controlled productions, distribution and exhibition as efficiently as she runs her famous household.

The many production companies owning their existence to the Rajakumar family have now become a byword for immaculate management. They know none of the chaos which generally reigns in a film production outfit. She rules the empire with a firm hand and keeps a tab on even the minutest developments in the industry, besides managing all the affairs of her celebrity husband including his interviews with the media and other dignitaries. Under her leadership the empire has proved to be the only one of its kind in the entire country.


The second child of Appaji Gowda and Lakshmamma born at Nanjangud Smt Parvathamma is the daughter of a music teacher. Singanallur Puttaswamaiah seeing her in the cradle decided that she will be daughter in law of his house. That`s how Muthuraj who later became Dr Rajakumar and Parvathamma Rajakumar was fixed.

It was on a bicycle ride Muthuraj and Parvathi slip down and fall. After this incident Muthuraj from his small pocket money presents an ear ring.

Looking at this presentation to Parvathi the father of Muthuraj praises his son and is confirmed that Muthuraj would look after Parvathi very well in life.

When Parvathi is 14 Muthuraj is 24 the marriage is conducted. But Muthuraj father Puttaswamaiah was no more at this time. Smt Lakshmamma mother of Muthuraj advises her son on the responsibilities in life.

On 25th June 1953 the marriage of Parvathi and Muthuraj takes place at Ranappa Choultry in Nanjangud. Muthuraj takes Rs.800 as loan from Subbai Naidu stage actor and theatre group head.

It is after one yearsof marriage to Parvathi the young Muthuraj of 25 years gets a call from AVM Studios for the role in Bedara Kannappa`.

It was the shift of the entire family to Madras – Muthuraj is rechristened as Rajakumar. The new responsibility of Smt Parvathi also adds up in an unknown place.
It is in fact the start of growth in the life of Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar. In all the activities, growth and good deeds of Dr Rajakumat the one lady who stood like rock pillar was Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar.

Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar delivered her first child only after 9 years of marriage. That is on July 12 1962 – name as Shivarajakumar – Dr Rajakumar was acting in Santha Thukaram` Kannada film. Later two female children born named as Lakshmi and Poornima. Raghavendra Rajakumar was born when Dr Rajakumar was doing the role of Sri Raghavendra Swamy in Mantralaya Mahatme`. In the seventies another boy was born and that was the time of Mayura` blockbuster Kannada cinema of Dr Rajakumar. He was named as Lohith who later became Puneeth – the No.1 star of Kannada cinema – super power star Puneeth Rajakumar.

The matters related to business cropped in the mind of Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar seriously when Ranadheera Kanteerava` was made by collecting money.

Getting knowledge from Venugopala in film making and investment in 1975 from Trimurthy` Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar became Producer and launched the banner Poornima Enterprises. Puneeth Rajakumar was just three months baby at that time.

After the kidnap of Dr Rajakumar by fugitive Veerappan and keeping him for 108 days Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar did become sick. For no mistake the humble husband has been kept as hostage was a major shock of her life.

After this even the physical strength of Dr Rajakumar also reduced.

In all 78 films are produced by Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar in Kannada from Trimurthy` to – Hudugru`.

After 50 years of successful and unbeatable married life with Dadasaheb Phalke award winning husband Dr Rajakumar she obeys the destiny call on April 12, 2006 – the emperor of the family departs – that is Dr Rajakumar creating a huge void in the Kannada cinema industry.

Among the innumerable awards won by Smt Parvathamma Rajakumar – Phalke Academy award, Lifetime Achievement Award from Karnataka government, Kannada Rajyotsava award are notable.
